The Cluan Tier is an area of State Forest lying between Westbury and the Western Tiers. The site is accessed by following C502 from Exton.
The Cluan Tier has been harvested for timber since around 1860 and a number of different harvesting and management practices have been used. Evidence of early timber harvesting is clearly evident at many sites as well as more recent management techniques such as clearfalling, potential sawlog retention, thinning and plantation establishment.
In addition to forest management techniques the area has good examples of different forest types including dry sclerophyll, wet sclerophyll and rainforest. The evolution of forests from dry sclerophyll to rainforest is clearly illustrated here as well.
A Teacher Guide and Student Workbook, covering a number of designated stops on Gum Top Road, have been prepared. The route and stops are clearly marked as are the three short walks suggested. The Teacher Guide covers a brief history of the area, a description of the forest types present, evolution of forest types, forestry in Tasmania, maps, notes for each stop, plant identification charts and answers to questions posed in the Student Workbook.
