Hollybank Forest and local sawmill Orientation field trip

Fact sheet 5

Hollybank Forest is located beside the Lilydale road about 30 minutes from Launceston by bus. This site offers opportunities for school groups to investigate wet and dry native eucalypt forest environments, radiata pine and eucalypt plantations. Originally a source of sawmill timber for Launceston the area was cleared for farmland before being converted to an ash plantation in the early 1930’s. The failure of this venture saw Forestry Tasmania purchase the area and take responsibility for its management. This field trip also offers teachers an opportunity to visit a sawmill and follow the processing of logs into dried boards.During the field trip we will be addressing the learning opportunities which a study of forests provide for students focusing on the SOSE, Science and Technology Learning Areas. Site specific resources developed to aid teachers when visiting the Hollybank Forest will be available.
