Forest industries in the Launceston area

Orientation field trip

Fact sheet 8

There are a number of industries downstream processing forest products in the Launceston area. These industries include hardwood sawmills, furniture manufacturers, interior fit-outs such as kitchens and a cardboard manufacturer. Each of these use their own specialist technology and work skills to turn raw material into products for sale to the consumer market. Specialised furniture craft work and design innovation is also on display. This field trip allows teachers to follow the manufacturing process in three Launceston industries: a hardwood sawmill processing round logs into dressed timber, a furniture manufacturer using a range of timber products and a cardboard manufacturer producing printed cardboard boxes from raw paper stock. The field trip concludes with a visit to the Tasmanian Wood Design Collection.
