The Arm River Outdoor Education Centre
offers a range of attractive options for interstate schools wishing
to learn more about Tasmania. The fact that the centre is located
in State Forest surrounded by the Walls of Jerusalem and Cradle Mountain-Lake
St. Claire National Parks opens up a range of possibilities for visiting
groups.
Forestry roads give access to a number of entry points into the Parks.
Day visits into some of the most spectacular scenic areas of the Parks
are possible. Low and high altitude options are available to suit
most weather conditions.
The Mersey River, close to the Arm River Outdoor Education Centre,
offers excellent white water rafting opportunities.
Safe caving and abseiling opportunities are only a short journey away.
For educational study the area is rich in:
- geological history including ice age activity
- Ecological diversity with communities ranging from grasslands
through various types, and ages, of eucalypt forest to several
types of rainforest as well as alpine vegetation.
- Aboriginal history including tool scatters, quarry sites and
shelters and remnant landscapes
- European history dating from 1827 including snarers, cattlemen,
explorers, track makers and the huts and trails they used.
- Extensive Hydro development
- Forestry and forest management processes
Costs: As school programs vary costs are negotiated with individual
school groups. The Centre offers full catering, has its own bus for
transport while groups are in residence and a qualified teacher acts
as tour guide and provides interpretation tailored to the needs of
each group.
Activities such as white water rafting, abseiling and caving have
additional costs associated with them as professional guides are employed
to conduct these activities. Actual costs will depend on group numbers
and time spent on these activities.
For up to date information about charges, accommodation, transfer
charges to the Centre from airports or Ferry terminal or questions
related to program options contact David Hamilton.
