The
Wielangta State Forest is located on the south east coast of Tasmania
between Orford and Copping. It is about one hours drive from Hobart.
The area has excellent examples of dry forest, wet forest, mixed
forest and rainforest as well as extensive regrowth and oldgrowth
sections. A number of different management practices have been applied
to the area including clearfalling, various selection logging practices
and plantation establishment. The area is also rich in early European
history, particularly in relation to early timber getting.
Three
resources have been developed for this area. A Field Guide for
Teachers provides teacher notes for each of nine stops which cover
the ecology, management and history of the area, as well as a
plant species guide for the more common plants found in the area.
An Overview Resource provides information on the forest types
of the area, notes on the cultural history and forest management
planning. The third resource focuses on the Management Process
for Harvesting and Regenerating a Logging Coupe. This resource
takes an intensive look at two adjacent coupes that have had different
management prescriptions applied to them. The planning, harvesting
and regeneration processes used are examined in detail.
