Activities in the NFLC
The groups are initially introduced to the Centre and start with an introduction (what is a forest?) to forest types in Tasmania. This is a whole group activity, using the interactive white board to allow students to participate in the building of forest ecosystems and considering the effects of natural processes such as fire. With many groups we also incorporate a role-play scenario to better illustrate the forest environment. This usually takes about 30 minutes and is the suggested starting point for groups who are just beginning to explore forest ecosystems.
We then divide the students into small groups of 2/3, with each group having time to complete at least two 20 minute activities. Depending on group size, time available and the focus of the visit, all activities can be covered or just a few. The whole group can then come back together at the end for a general summary, or a look forward to a site visit.
The activities currently available are listed below - for more details click here. We also advise that you read the Information for Teachers page before your visit.
