About the Forest Education Foundation
The Forest Education Foundation Incorporated, FEF, was formed in 1989 as a joint initiative between the forest industries and Forestry Tasmania.
The prime objective of the FEF is:
“To encourage informed decisions about forest use within the community by promoting a sound understanding of forests and forestry processes and of the social, economic and environmental values of forests”
Since its inception in 1989 the Forest Education Foundation has developed a wide range of resources, program options and venues designed for education audiences. In addition educational materials have been produced for Forestry Tasmania and nationally accredited TAFE courses have been developed and run in the area of Tourism Guiding.
In response to significant teacher demand for forest experiences for their students a number of field sites around the state have been developed as day visit areas. Outline information on the ecology, history and management practices associated with each of these sites along with appropriate maps and access details can be found on this website in the Teachers and Students section. Much more detailed information is contained in the Project Forest DVD. An outline of this information can be viewed under Project Forest in the Publications section on this website.
The Forest Education Foundation has also published a range of educational materials for classroom use including the award winning Project Forest materials. These materials have recently been updated and are available in DVD format. This comprehensive DVD focusses on Tasmania’s forests, their ecology and management, timber industry history, processing products, new technology and the many different and changing values associated with our interactions with these environments. There is a Teachers section making links to the Tasmanian curriculum as well as video and other supporting resources. For more information about the Project Forest package visit the publications section on this website. The FEF has also published a children’s picture book based on the Wielangta State Forest in South East Tasmania. This book was recognised as a notable book by the Children’s Book Council of Australia. Other publications are listed in the Publications section of this website.
The Forest Education Foundation is also actively involved in National Science Week and the Tasmanian Science Talent Search and has contributed to the development of the Tasmanian Education Department Science of Natural Resources curriculum.
The FEF currently employs 3 full time teachers, Darcy Vickers, Clinton Jordon and Sarah Langley based in Hobart.
