Earlier this month saw the launch of the National Forest Learning Centre with an Open Day for schools and members of the public

Scientists from Forestry Tasmania and radio hosts Kim and Dave from Heart FM, joined the Forest Education Foundation Staff to present a series of activities about forests and forestry.

Activities included learning about forest ecology using the smartboard, investigating the concept of sustainable yield with a matchstick forest, and understanding how forests are manged for endangered species, such as wedge tailed eagles. Students also had the chance to visit the labs to learn about the roles of forest invertebrates, investigate different pulping methods for paper production, and discover the importance of rotting wood in a forest ecosystem. Over 150 students from grade 1 to 10, teachers and members of the public visited during the course of the day, which included Heart Fm give-aways, live links to the studio and, of course, a sausage sizzle!
